Jubilee party vice chairman David Murathe has broken his silence on why he has not been actively participating in Azimio maandamano.

Speaking on Wednesday, Murathe said his absence from the opposition protests has been deliberate.

He went on to say that the President William Ruto-led administration has been trying to link retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to the protests, with any slight hint they get.

Murathe, however, announced that beginning next week, he will fully participate in the protests.

He added that he will be at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Friday when he returns to the country.

"The reason I'll be on the maandamano and I'll be in the airport to receive Raila Amollo Odinga is because these people are looking for an excuse. You see Murathe, you see Uhuru.

"They have always been trying to link these Maandamanos to the former president. So, some of us have tried to deliberately not be out there though we are firmly in Azimio," Murathe said on NTV.

The opposition had announced that it will start a fresh round of protests on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Raila has been out of the country for a few days and is expected to return from his trip to Dubai on Friday.

On Wednesday, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party asked its supporters to turn up and welcome Raila Odinga at JKIA on Friday.

National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi also wrote to Azimio MPs asking them to gather at the JKIA to welcome Raila when he returns.

“As a party, we are gearing to accord him a grand welcome on arrival at the JKIA, then join him in a grand procession to the people’s Baraza at the Kamkunji Grounds, Kibra Constituency, on the same day. The Rt Hon Odinga will address the nation at the said meeting,” the Ugunja town MP said.
