Amani Sasa Foundation chairman and ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has called on the people of the Mount Kenya region to promote unity and stop divisive politics.

Speaking to Star on Wednesday, Maina Njenga maintained that he is traversing the GEMA region reaching out to the community leaders for the sake of peace and unity.

He highlighted the importance of different communities coming together and advocating for peaceful co-existence.

“We are talking about the unity of the Mt Kenya people — the Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu and as their spokesperson I know we will unite and speak with one voice to champion our interests,” Njenga said.

Njenga dismissed the debate on who the region's kingpin is and declared himself the spokesperson of the region

He noted that he (Njenga) is the current spokesperson of the Mount Kenya region having been given the mandate by the late minister Njenga Karume who was his relative.

“I’m the spokesperson of the Mount Kenya region and this debate of who is the region kingpin should end. I visited the late Njenga Karume at his deathbed in hospital and he gave me the mandate to look after the community and since I don’t want to attract his curse, nothing will stop me from pushing and protecting our people,” Maina Njenga stated.

He further dismissed reports linking his Amani Sasa Foundation to the resurgence of Mungiki, a criminal gang operating similarly to the dreaded outlawed group in parts of central Kenya.

“It is unfair for people to link  Amani Sasa Foundation to the criminal activities of a gang causing trouble among residents of Central Kenya. Ours is a unity group and we no longer associate with illegal groups,” Njenga said.

He emphasized his new Christian calling noting that he is the current chairman of the Christian Independent Movement (CIM) which comprises over 5000 churches across the Country.

He rallied the leadership of the Mount Kenya region to come together and speak in one voice noting that the Kalenjin community is fully behind William Ruto, the Luo community behind Raila and Luhya are loyal to both Musalia and Wetangula.

He regretted that the people of Mount Kenya region aren’t behind anyone noting that both Uhuru and Gachagua should talk in one voice and delegate on whom the community will rally behind.

Joseph Muriira Mwangi, chairman of Amani Sasa Meru Chapter, noted that Maina Njenga is the only leader from the Mt Kenya region who should speak on behalf of the community.

He noted that the GEMA community has been left vulnerable as there is no one speaking on their behalf.

“GEMA community should sit down and speak in one voice as failure to do so will cost the community dearly, “he noted.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has embarked on an aggressive campaign to dislodge retired President Uhuru Kenyatta as the undisputed Mt Kenya kingpin.

The DP has been on a back-to-back offensive in the vote-rich region, meeting and wooing strong Uhuru troops in apparent efforts to fill the political leadership void created by the retired President’s departure.

Kikuyu Council of Elders’ national chairman Wachira Kiago recently told the Star that they have initiated a unity talk between former president Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

Wachira Kiago noted that the community is losing political direction due to who should lead the community.

“We are pushing for unity between former head of state Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and this will help to unite the community,” Wakiago said.

The Service Party (TSP) leader Mwangi Kiunjuri recently during a television interview noted that the Mt Kenya region is losing heavily due to lack of unity.

He castigated a section of Kenya Kwanza leadership from Mount Kenya who has been fighting him due to his stand.
