Suspected thug rescued from angry mob in Machakos

A suspected thug has been rescued from lynching by the public in Athi River, Machakos.

The unidentified man escaped death after he was subjected to mob injustice for allegedly robbing the public of their valuables within the subcounty on Tuesday.

Machakos county police boss Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the suspect was rescued by officers from Athi River police station who responded to a report on the same.

The incident was reported to Athi River police station as mob injustice/ recovery of exhibits report at 10.00 pm Tuesday.

“It was reported through telephone by a security officer manning the gate of East Africa Portland Cement factory last night 18/04/2023 at 1920 hours, that a man was cornered and being subjected to mob injustice near the said factory by members of the public,” Napeiyan told the Star on phone Wednesday.

Napeiyan said police officers on patrol were immediately informed of the incident and promptly responded to the scene of the incident and managed to rescue the said African male adult.

He said the suspect refused to identify himself to the police and possessed no identification documents during the incident.

“He was found to have sustained injuries of several cuts on his head and the face was bleeding. Upon search, the suspect believed to be on a mission of mugging in full scale was found with one knife and in possession of five mobile phones of different makes recovered from his pockets,” Napeiyan said.

Napeiyan said a motorcycle make Boxer, red that he was riding on was also recovered from the scene.

He said police further established through the recovered phones, one of them a Samsung A12 dialling number obtained, tested and confirmed to have been stolen through mugging from a woman, resident of Empakasi area of Athi River South subcounty on the same day, April 18 at 4.00 pm.

The suspect was taken to Athi River Level 4 Hospital where he was treated and referred to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for further management.

The recovered motorcycle was impounded at the Athi River police station.

“He is currently in transit to Machakos under armed police guard,” Napeiyan said.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations sleuths attached to Athi River police station have launched a probe into the incident.
