Police are hunting down a group that raided a police patrol base in Kakamega and stole more than 1,200 bags of fertilizer.

The gang also vandalized property including a police car before escaping.

They stoned and injured eight police officers as they protested an earlier incident in which Kisa East Ward Member of County of Assembly Stephene Maloba had been stabbed to death.

Police said the gang stormed the Emasastsi patrol base with stones prompting officers on duty to shoot into the air in vain.

They later stole 1,240 bags of fertilizer belonging to the county government which were in safe custody pending distribution to the farmers.

Later, the officers received information and managed to recover a total of 15 bags from Ebutsemba village.

A team of detectives is moving around the village searching for more of the stolen property and arresting suspects over the Monday, March 3 incident.

The irate mob also torched the house and motorbike of the area chief Walter Obuchere and slaughtered three of his cows.

The youth were protesting the killing of Maloba who was stabbed to death on Saturday, April 1.

Maloba was attacked and stabbed following a heated confrontation with supporters of Khwisero Member of Parliament Christopher Aseka Wangaya.

Aseka had convened a meeting at the home of one of his supporters near a secondary school and a group of individuals believed to be the supporters of the MP confronted Maloba telling him that he was not wanted at the meeting.

Maloba who was walking on foot was then confronted and stabbed in the left armpit and died in the hospital.

Police said they are looking for the suspects behind the incident.

The team has so far recorded statements from witnesses as part of the probe into the incident.

An autopsy is planned on the body to form the basis of the probe, police said as they urged for patience.

Western regional police commander Kiprono Langat said detectives are handling the matter and urged for patience from locals especially politicians.
