Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says the government needs a big team to work on reviving the dilapidated economy. 

Speaking during a round table interview with Mt Kenya Region journalists, Gachagua defended the government's move to nominate 50 Chief Administrative Secretaries.

He said the Kenya Kwanza administration inherited a dilapidated economy and needs a lot of work to be revived, hence many leaders. 

"The ministries available in the country have cross-cutting issues that need to be addressed, we are working towards reviving the economy and we are bringing in new energy to revitalise existing capacity and strength," he said.

Gachagua's office has been allocated up to three CASs from the 50 nominated by President William Ruto on Thursday. 

Ann Mwangi, Nicholas Rioba and Edwin Wandambusi have been nominated to serve as assistant ministers under Gachagua's office. 

The nominees will now be vetted by the National Assembly before being appointed by the President. 

Their roles entail responding to issues touching on the portfolio assigned to the office and providing liaison with the bicameral Parliament and county governments on matters of concurrent mandate and common interest.

It will cost Kenyans up to Sh460 million annually in salaries for the 50 CASs

CAS are entitled to the same gross pay as Permanent secretaries whose pay was reviewed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to ShSh765,188 from Sh874,500.

They are also entitled to a one-off mortgage funding of Sh35 million and Sh10 million car grant.

This translates to Sh1.75 billion in mortgage expenditure and Sh500 million in car grants.
