Udhabiti Africa is calling on Kenyans and the government to appreciate and compensate childcare workers.

The early childhood development lobby said that this is the most foolproof way of ensuring children get quality childcare.

Udhabiti said that one crucial aspect of addressing this issue is recognising and valuing the importance of the work that women in childcare do.

"Childcare providers play a vital role in the lives of families and communities, and their work should be appreciated and compensated accordingly," they said.

Udhabiti held its inaugural Women In Childcare Forum 2023 in Nairobi last week.

During the Forum, women working in the childcare sector, including domestic workers, came out to highlight their plight for a better industry.

The Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW) said it's important to acknowledge and address the systemic barriers that contribute to the challenges that women in childcare work face.

"These may include gender discrimination, lack of access to education and training, and societal expectations and norms that devalue care work," they said.

Addressing these underlying issues, they said, they can create a more equitable and supportive environment for women in childcare work.

Damaris Wambua, Early Childhood Development Specialist said that the value of childcare workers cannot be overlooked because they contribute to children's development.

She said quality childcare provides children with a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn, explore, and develop.

"It ensures that children receive the proper nutrition, healthcare, and socialisation they need to thrive," she said.

"There is a need for quality childcare because if in one way or another, the environment in which children grow up does not stimulate proper growth, then they may not be able to realize their full potential," she said.
