The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) has celebrated gender equality and diversity in the Kenyan Judiciary.

The lobby lauded the progress made in the Judiciary toward achieving gender equality as the world celebrates the International Day of Women Judges on Friday.

"Today, we celebrate progress towards gender equality in the judiciary and acknowledge the need for continued efforts towards women's full and equal participation in decision-making positions," they said.

This comes amid the continued national debate over the controversial decision by the Supreme Court to allow the legal registration of the rights group.

Justices Philomena Mwilu, Smokin Wanjala and Njoki Ndung’u had ruled that it would be unconstitutional to limit the right to associate, through denial of registration of an association, purely based on sexual orientation.

Their decision out ruled Justices Mohammed Ibrahim and William Ouko who were in disagreement.

In their minority decision, the two said the government cannot allow the registration of an organisation whose mission was furthering illegality, as homosexuality is illegal in Kenya.

Since the ruling, the country has been divided on opinion as LGBTQ  rights groups have warned members of the community to stay safe, fearing for their physical safety.
