Three robbery suspects were killed by a mob in Makongeni in Thika on Wednesday.

The three who were riding on a motorcycle are alleged to have snatched a handbag from a woman in Polysack area before escaping towards Thika town on a getaway motorbike.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement said the woman’s screams caught the attention of boda boda riders and a few other young men who were in a nearby shed waiting for passengers.

“This prompted the boda boda riders to give chase after the bike, as no less than 30 motorbikes flew past the busy highway baying for the trio’s blood,” the DCI said.

As they approached Delta petrol station, a matatu that was speeding towards Sagana, suddenly appeared making the bike swerve to avoid a head-on collision.

The rider lost control making the three crush on the tarmac.

“What followed was a beating accusing them of soiling their good name by using motorbikes as their gateway means after committing crime,” the DCI said.

By the time police officers arrived, the three had unfortunately been killed and their bodies set ablaze.

Police moved their charred remains to the General Kago Hospital morgue to await identification by their relatives.

“Meanwhile, three knives belonging to the suspects, a mobile phone and personal effects robbed from the victim were recovered,” the DCI said.

The DCI has called on members of the public not to take the law into their hands but to hand over such suspects to the police for justice in court.
