Integrity Watch, a group of NGOs, civil society organisations and faith-based organisations, has cautioned politicians against holding rallies in the Central Business District of cities and major towns.

The group said rallies in CBDs are likely to lead to destruction or loss of business in urban areas.

“Integrity Watch urges all political actors to create a conducive environment whereby both local and international investors can do business,” said Fredrick Jowi, a human rights activist.

Integrity Watch made the call hours to Azimio La Umoja rally at Jivanjee Gardens in Nairobi. Opposition leader Raila Odinga called the rally to pray for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The planned meeting is causing jitters over possible disruptions of economic activities and confrontations with police in the streets of Nairobi.

In a statement, Integrity Watch urged the Opposition to provide alternative solutions to issues facing the citizenry.

“We urge both the government and the opposition to respect and uphold the Constitution as the symbol of authority,” Jowi said.

He reiterated that all political actors and their supporters should act within the law, the Constitution and the African Charter to which Kenya is a party.

He said the political class should engage respectfully and soberly, appreciating that sensational statements may have dire consequences.

“We remind politicians that inciting Kenyans is against their solemn vow to uphold and defend the Constitution,” he stated.

He added that the group will not relent in pushing for accountability, integrity and fidelity to the law by the political class.
