Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is staring at impeachment after MCAs approved a motion to kick her out of office.

Members of the Meru County Assembly tabled an impeachment motion against the governor on Wednesday morning.

The impeachment motion sailed through after MCAs backed it overwhelmingly.

A total of 67 MCAs out of 69 voted in favour of his impeachment. The two were absent.

The MCAs want her out of office over alleged gross misconduct, the appointment of her husband to the county office and claims over the dismissal of county officers.

Mwangaza, however, did not appear before the MCAs to defend herself saying the impeachment motion is contempt of court.

On November 30, the Meru court halted her first impeachment motion.

Justice Wamae Cherere said the motion did not follow the correct procedure in initiating an ouster bid against Mwangaza.

"I'm guided by the principle that a party, such as a petitioner, is not required to suffer illegality or breach of her rights and resultant injustice on the solace that her grievance would be remedy either by the assembly or the Senate," she said.

The MCAs, however, introduced the second impeachment motion which they tabled on Wednesday for debate.
