Duty free maize imports are set to begin next year between February and August.

The government had disclosed it will import 10 million bags of maize after a review establishes the grain deficits in the country.

In a statement, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi noted that the importation will not take place till next year.

Farmers and some politicians raised queries over the quick decision to import maize yet the country had not exhausted the grains in their stores.

"An import duty waiver will be granted for millers and traders to import 900 000 metric tonnes of white maize and 600 000 tonnes of milled rice from February to August 2023," the Ministry of Agriculture said.

"This is to enable the country to have adequate stocks to last until the next harvest from July- August 2023,"
