Let's turn borders to bridges, Ruto urges SA delegation

President says by uniting, Kenya and South Africa will stand boundless

President William Ruto has said African states should work together and eliminate barriers between them.

He said state borders must not be walls, preventing good relations and inter-continental trade.

"We must turn our borders from being hurdles to being bridges and make them facilitative," he said.

Ruto spoke on Wednesday at KICC during a Kenya-South Africa Trade Forum, attended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who is the country ona three-day state visit.

"...so that we can do trade, businesses, make investments and move people, goods and service freely in our continent," he added.

He said Kenya and South Africa in particular, hold the potential of unleashing opportunities in the continent by working together.

The President said by uniting, the two states will stand boundless.

"By combining the experience, know-how of South African people with the agility and the innovation of the Kenyan people, there is no limit," he said.

Reiterating that Kenya is open for investment, he said the country has huge opportunities for South African private sector and business entities.

He added that there were opportunities in housing and settlement plan.

"We are short of two million houses. My good brother President Ramaphosa told me you have already build four million houses in South Africa," he said.

"We want to build at least two hundred thousand houses every year and we want South African companies to come and work with us."

At the same time, Ramaphosa welcomed Kenya's plan to set up warehouses in South Africa for Kenyan goods.

"We welcome it and we are open to that," he said.

He lauded ministers and cabinet secretaries for their determination to improve the relationship between the countries.
