Outgoing Isiolo Governor Mohammed Kuti has thanked county residents after his 20-year political career came to an end.

Kuti, who announced his retirement from politics in March this year, said he was bowing out of politics with honour and respect.

“It is hard for a politician to retire before time because they either die or get impeached. I have been given the opportunity in the political world for 20 years and when I left, I left with dignity and honour,” he said on Wednesday.

In a surprise declaration on March 26, 2022, Kuti said he wants to focus on his health and urged the residents to elect the then Nairobi Majority leader Abdi Hassan Guyo.

Every start has an end. I have been battling health complications since December. This has prompted me to step aside and concentrate on my health, my family and God,” Kuti said as he declared ‘Guyo Tosha.’

Kuti however, reiterated that he will not take a break from "preaching politics of peace" in the county even after he leaves office.

He previously served as the senator for Isiolo for one term (2013–2017).

He further represented the Isiolo North Constituency in the National Assembly for 10 years (2002-2013).

Kuti also held the positions of Minister for Youth Affairs in 2005 and Minister for Livestock from 2008 to 2013.

Going further, the outgoing Governor Kuti who has been in a wheelchair for the past few months, praised his residents for showering him with get-well-soon messages.

“I want to pass my gratitude to the Isiolo Community. I fell and broke my leg and got many get well wishes across Isiolo both verbally and through social media and some even visited,” Kuti added.

Speaking on his successor, Kuti said he owes the victory to God, who guided him in the succession plan.

"In hands of blessings upon the young man who will succeed me because in our traditions as Africans, when an old man sees he is getting tired, he doesn’t leave without considering his people and that is where the succession plan comes in,” Kuti added

History was made as Nairobi’s Matopeni MCA Abdi Hassan alias Guyo became the first MCA to clinch a Governor seat.

Guyo, under the Jubilee Party ticket, was declared the winner of the Isiolo governor race where he garnered 28,946 votes to beat former Governor Godana Doyo who ran as an Independent ticket. Doyo garnered 26,270.
