Man arrested after 9-year-old found driving on Mombasa Road

Police said the father will be taken to court to face the charges.

Police from Athi River have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly allowing his 9-year-old child to drive his vehicle.

The underage was earlier spotted on Mombasa Road by the motorists who alerted traffic police on Wednesday morning.

"A pupil of 9 years was seen driving, upon the efforts made by the police to intercept him, he sped towards Athi River Township,” Athi River police head Mary Njoki said.

Njoki said the boy was ordered to pull over but did not adhere to that.

"Officers perused the vehicle after the child sped off and they found out the boy was in the driver's seat," she added.

The father was arrested after the police caught up with the child later.

Njoki said the father will be taken to court to face the charges.

"It is illegal for any Kenyan to allow unlicensed people to drive their vehicle, especially a child and it is an offence charged in court, " she noted.

Section 30(1) and (7) of the Traffic Act states that driving without a valid driving license endorsement in respect of the class of vehicle - Sh7,000.
