The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has denied reports that ballot papers were destroyed in Tharaka Nithi county.

In a press conference at the Bomas of Kenya, chairman Wafula Chebukati said what was destroyed were polling booths for Tuesday's general election.

"That's not true," Chebukati said in response to a question from members of the media on what restorative measures the commission had taken to ensure voting would not be affected following the incident.

"What was destroyed were a few booths by some individuals who attacked the vehicle and those are items we have in plenty we shall replace them," Chebukati confirmed.

He said the process of replacing the material was already ongoing.

The IEBC boss clarified that ballot papers are escorted under heavy security to minimize chances of their destruction while in transit.

"Those are all safe save for the cases that we have mentioned in our presser," he said.
