Deputy President William Ruto ended his five-day visit to the US on March 5, with a Townhall meeting with Kenyans diaspora in the US.
On Tuesday, a fake statement emerged on social media claiming that the DP secured the Moderna mRNA deal while in the US.
The fake letter dated March 8, indicates that it was drafted by the DP's Presidential Campaign Director of communications Hussein Mohamed.
According to the letter, the DP held a closed-door meeting with Moderna's CEO Stephane Bancel at the company's headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The fact-checker has verified that the information being circulating through social media is fake and that the DP did not meet with Moderna's CEO.
Also, Ruto did not visit Massachusetts as claimed in the statement.
Further, Hussein Mohamed has flagged the statement as fake.
The statement comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Kenya and Moderna to establish the first mRNA manufacturing facility in Africa.
The state-of-the-art mRNA facility in Africa is expected to produce up to 500 million doses of vaccines each year.
The Company anticipates investing up to $500 million(Sh57b) in the new facility, which will focus on drug substance manufacturing on the continent of Africa for the continent of Africa.
