Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has said that Azimio leader Raila Odinga's planned exit from the local political space has left the opposition outfit 'confused'.

Speaking on Wednesday, Orwoba said since the Opposition leader made known his intention to go for the African Union Commission chairperson job, there has been some laxity from Azimio in keeping the government in check.

The Senator was reacting to reports of the launch of an alternative opposition outfit by Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba and her Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino.

"Babu Owino has said that there is a 'laxity' in opposition and I agree with him because the exit of Raila Odinga has left the opposition team completely confused. We need new ideas of opposition and when I see Wamuchomba in there it will be different," Orwoba said on K24 TV.

She went on to say that the new opposition outfit led by Wamuchomba and Babu Owino is timely.

The UDA-nominated senator insisted that to better run the government, the Kenya Kwanza administration needs a strong opposition to point out its shortcomings.

Orwoba said it is the criticism that has gotten the current government to listen to the people for better governance.

"In a time where Kenya Kwanza is pushing to change the country, we need fresh ideas and critical thinkers. You can't just run a government without an outfit or a form of criticism because it is the criticism that has been making governance in Kenya Kwanza more efficient, so seeing Wamuchomba there I know she's not going to bring maandamano."

The new opposition alliance to keep the government in check includes  MPs Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Caleb Amisi (Saboti), Busia Women Representative Catherine Omanyo, Amos Mwago (Starehe) and Charles Nguna (Mwingi West).

Babu on his part told the press that the unveiling of the forum follows the "laxity" seen in the main opposition coalition in fighting for the rights of Kenyans.

"This team will be on the ground to fight for the voice of the voiceless, to fight for the inherent and inalienable right of every Kenyan wherever they are in the eight regions," Babu said.

Following Raila's announcement that he was going for the AU Commission's top seat, leaders within the Azimio coalition as well as the ODM party have been fighting over who is better placed to take over from him.

Azimio's co-principals have all stepped up campaigns, while his deputy party leaders at ODM also insist that they are capable of taking charge, in Raila's absence, while he serves the continent, should he be elected AUC chairperson.
