Yatta MP Basil Roberts has alleged that the Embakasi fire tragedy was a result of failure in planning within the Ministry of Energy.

He has said that the ministry needs to step in and take responsibility for the fire.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, the MP alleged that the crackdowns put in place after the incident were 'reactive'.

"The government should have plans in place, it is unfortunate that people have to react when an occurrence takes place," he said on KBC.

Roberts also said that parliament should provide a complete report detailing what led to the fire and the actions that have been taken to prevent future incidents.

"We want a comprehensive report of what exactly transpired, what led to what we saw and what action has been taken. That report, we expect, from the relevant committee in parliament," Roberts said.

He further said that the Embakasi tragedy should be treated as a serious matter and some of the officials in the ministry should resign.

"If this had occurred in a progressive country, ministers and people of high-level positions would be stepping aside to show the seriousness of the situation."

After the Thursday night explosion that has left more than 700 residents of Embakasi affected, the government unveiled several initiatives to guarantee compliance in the industry.

These include, among other things, improving the LPG data verification system, rolling out a government LPG growth strategy immediately, demolishing any unlawful sites, and conducting a new risk assessment for all LPG facilities to eliminate any non-compliant locations.

Since the tragic explosion, there has been a blame game between the entities involved in the sector.
