State keen on addressing challenges affecting girls – Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the government will address challenges affecting girls in society.

In a statement on Friday, the DP said girls and boys have an equal chance of contributing to the socioeconomic development of the country but girls face more and unique challenges in accessing quality education and are exposed to harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation and child marriages.

"President William Ruto's administration is committed to demolishing these barriers for women to take their rightful position of transforming our country," he said.

He said the National Government Administration officers are working with counties and other partners in fighting the retrogressive barriers.

The DP added that the government has put in place a number of reforms in the education sector.

Gachagua spoke when he visited Isiolo Girls High School in Isiolo County.

He said it was inspiring to interact with the students and assess the needs of the institution with the aim of improving the learning environment.

The DP pledged to support the school and other sister institutions in the region for quality Education to transform society.

He was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, Principal Secretaries Mohamed Liban (Petroleum) and Kello Harsama (ASALs and Regional Development), Isiolo Governor Abdi Hassan, Woman Representatives Mumina Bonaya (Isiolo), Faith Gitau (Nyandarua), Liz Chelule (Nakuru), Jane Kagiri (Laikipia), Monicah Marabu (Lamu) and Pauline Lengoris (Samburu).

Other leaders present included MPs Senator Chute Mohamed (Marsabit), Joseph Samal (Isiolo North), Prof Guyo Waqo (Moyale), Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North), Abraham Kirwa (Mosop), Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Ali Laso (Saku), MCAs and the School Management, among others.
