Gachagua to visit Embakasi gas explosion site and KNH

Three people have been confirmed dead and over 280 injured following the tragedy.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is expected to visit the site of Thursday night's gas explosion tragedy at Mradi area of Embakasi, Nairobi.

The DP is also expected to visit victims of the tragedy who are admitted at the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital and the Kenya National Hospital (KNH).

The government has placed the death at three and total number of those injured at 280.

Most of the victims who sustained burn injuries have, however, been treated and discharged from the various health facilities they had been rushed to.

Some 157 victims were admitted to Mama Lucy hospital and 43 others at KNH.

The facility had the highest number of victims due to its proximity to the scene of the incident.

At KURH, there were 17 patients, Nairobi West Hospital (8), Modern Komarock (18), Metropolitan hospital (8) and AAR (3).

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said in an earlier update that the 143 had been discharged both from Mama Lucy and Mbagathi hospitals.

"As of now, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has treated 167 victims, comprising 142 adults and 25 children," he said.

He revealed the the county government has waived all medical fees for the victims of the fire.

"The County Government has also waived all medical fees at the County facilities attending to the injured and bereaved," he said.

Nairobi Woman representative Esther Passaris who visited Mama Lucy hospital said her office has supported those affected with bedding as she appealed for more support from the government and other well wishers.

Each of the victims, she added, will receive Sh5,000.
