Embakasi fire survivors to get Sh5,000 each as aid – Passaris

She said the county is going to purchase mattresses for the survivors as some homes had been burnt down.

Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has said the survivors of the Thursday night Embakasi fire incident will each get Sh5,000 in aid. 

She said the County Government is working to help the injured patients through this difficult time.  

"We are giving them Sh5,000 each because we know that tonight they will need a place to sleep as well as food," she said.  

Passaris also noted that the patients from the fire incident will be treated free of charge as directed by Governor Johnson Sakaja. 

She condoled with the families that had lost their loved ones in the midnight fire incident. 

Passaris spoke at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on Friday and noted the hospital had run out of medication due to the high number that had been brought in for treatment. 

"We got a quick response from friends and we were able to buy medication and we realised that we need to help the hospital stock up," she said. 

"We have bought medicine of about Sh400,000 which are on their way coming here to stock the hospital and there will be others coming in." 

She said the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) Nairobi only gets Sh1,000,000 for disaster management, calling for more funds. 

She said the county is going to purchase mattresses for the survivors as some homes had been burnt down. 

"For now we only have 100 mattresses in stock. We have given food that is bread and sodas to the survivors," she said.

Passaris said the patients once seen by the doctor were placed in a tent where they awaited their prescribed medication. 

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura while at the scene of the incident said up 280 persons sustained injuries following the fire. 

He said of the 280 injured persons, 43 have been sent to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment. 

17 at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Another 157 were rushed to Mama Lucy General Hospital while 18 were taken to Komarock's Modern Hospital. 

Some 21 of the injured persons are at Garrison Hospital.  8 were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital where three of them succumbed to injuries. 

Another 8 are receiving treatment from Metropolitan Hospital and two from Radiant Hospital. 

Mwaura said there is one patient at Pendo Hospital, three at AAR and 4 at the  Nairobi hospital.
