Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba now says that former President Uhuru Kenyatta did not become Mt Kenya kingpin because his father was the founding president of Kenya.

Speaking on Thursday, Wamuchomba said that Uhuru earned that title because of what he did for the people of Central Kenya.

The MP insisted that such an argument cannot stand because other people have been presidents in Kenya and their sons are not kingpins of their communities.

"I am looking at all those people we call kingpins in Mt Kenya historically, it is not in any dispute that Uhuru Kenyatta has been a kingpin. What made Uhuru Kenyatta a kingpin? to be honest it was not because he was a son of the late president. No, because we have had other sons of late presidents who are not Kingpins," Wamuchomba said on KTN News.

She went on to say that Uhuru earned the role because he at some point had to sacrifice his ambition for another person from the community.

She referenced the 2007 general elections when Uhuru who was at the time the main Opposition leader dropped his bid to back former president Mwai Kibaki who was seeking a second term in office.

Political analysts believe that had Uhuru not dropped his bid, the Mt Kenya vote would have been highly divided and this would have handed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga an easy ascent to the presidency.

"The reason why Uhuru Kenyatta became a kingpin is because he showed at some point that he could take a bullet for the people of Mt Kenya. You know very well and those that are close to my age remember 2007. They know what Uhuru Kenyatta did for the sake of the people of Mt Kenya," she said.

"Uhuru Kenyatta became kingpin the day he sacrificed self, family, everything for us and we saw it."

She cautioned all who are seeking to become the region's leaders that it is not a position one gets because of the political position one holds.

She insisted that it is done through one's service to the region.

"This hullabaloo of who is the kingpin and queenpin is not political and you can never become a kingpin of your community because of politics. You can only become kingpin or queenpin through your dedicated service," the MP said.

Wamuchomba's remarks come amidst an ongoing succession battle on who should take over the leadership of Mt Kenya Region in 2027.

A section of UDA elected leaders want Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as Ruto's number two in the next presidential election.

Gachagua has, on his part rubbished the calls insisting that this is not the time to politic, but to work for the people.
