Two people have been arrested and a motor - vehicle impounded as police recovered donkey meat in Lower Yatta, Kitui County.

Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the arrests were made during an operation conducted by his officers at a home in Katothya village, Lower Yatta subcounty early Sunday.

The incident was reported to Kwavonza police station as interception of donkey meat and arrests of suspects at 5.00 am.

"It was reported by an administrator that members of the public had sighted a group of unknown people slaughtering donkeys within Katothya village in the homestead of one Wambua Nzioka," Napeiyan told the Star on Sunday.

Napeiyan said police responded to the scene and made the arrests and recoveries.

He said some of the suspects managed to escape on foot while the two who attempted to escape in a motor - vehicle, were intercepted leading to their arrest.

"Some of the suspects managed to escape on foot while others escaped before they were pelted with stones," Napeiyan said.

He said officers from Kwavonza police station together with DCI Lower Yatta subcounty conducted an operation and the said vehicle was intercepted by Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit officers who were manning a cess collection barrier along Kitui - Machakos Road.

"The same vehicle was escorted to the station with two suspects namely Paul Ngige, 39, and Ahmed Chege, 40 who were arrested with the suspected donkey meat," Napeiyan said.

The police chief said the officers proceeded to the scene at Katothya in the Kanyonyoo area and established that the suspects had slaughtered twelve donkeys at Wambua's homestead.

Wambua is among the suspects who escaped after they realised that they had been sighted by members of the public.

The scene had been processed and both subcounty vet and public health officers were informed to assist in the investigations by press time.

Napeiyan said the donkeys were believed to have been taken to the scene from an unknown destination on Saturday.

He said DCI detectives attached to the Lower Yatta subcounty have launched investigations into the incident.
