Ten people have been arrested in connection to donkey theft and illegal slaughter in Makueni County.
Police nabbed the ten in a swoop conducted at Kwa Kathoka village in Kikumini early Saturday.
Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the incident was reported to the Kathoka police post.
"It was reported by an administrator that within Kikumini sublocation, there was ongoing slaughtering of suspected stolen donkeys and vehicles waiting to collect the meat," Napeiyan told the Star by phone on Saturday.
Napeiyan said upon receipt of the information, the officer commanding the police post together with his officers responded and laid an ambush at a feeder road and intercepted two motor vehicles with the suspected donkey meat.
Napeiyan said the suspects admitted that they had slaughtered 15 donkeys at the said homestead and they have been doing so for a while.
He said the suspects confessed to transporting the meat to the Nairobi's Shauri Moyo Market.
Napeiyan said the scene where the slaughtering was ongoing was visited by the officers who processed it.
He said the cops established that the hooves and heads of the donkeys had been buried at the said compound.
The suspects were held in lawful custody at Makueni police station where the exhibits had been kept pending arraignment in court.
Napeiyan said they had launched a probe into the incident.
