Four Migori MCAs have come out to defend Suna East MP Junet Mohamed against political attacks by some Muslim community members in the county.

Suna Central MCA Samuel Obrien and three nominated members Beatrice Matengo, Rose Aoro and Caroline Okere said they will stand with Junet despite coming from the minority Somali community.

“We want to say that we are still confident with Junet and his leadership despite coming from a minority community,” Obrien said.

He said the MP has been a role model in leadership and those questioning why he has been voted for a third term as a legislator should pick a lesson from former US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The four and several residents, who addressed journalists in Migori town, were responding to an earlier press conference by Migori Muslim Development Committee chairman Omar ‘Zam Zam’ Hussein and former Mandera MCA Faiza Hussein.

The two accused Junet of undermining democracy in the ODM party and not developing the constituency compared to neighbouring legislators.

“We want to say that Junet should stop antagonising other leaders not only in Migori, but also among Muslims and Northeastern region from accessing the ODM party and its leader Raila Odinga,” Omar said.

Faizal said Junet has nothing to show for a decade of NG-CDF use.

On New Year's eve, former councillor George Bonyo and Suna Central ward politician Baraza Nguka also called out the legislator, saying he has nothing to show for 10 years of NG-CDF kitty use.

“When we ask about development in the constituency and use of funds, we should not be intimidated,” Bonyo said.

Nguka said the concerns they are raising are valid since Suna East voters want to know why there are no new schools being built and other upgraded for the last 10 years. He said electricity connectivity is a mirage in some areas.

“We feel Junet should use his closeness to ODM leader Raila to start looking for nomination because if some of these concerns are not tackled, he might lose at the ballot,” Nguka said.

But the four MCAs supporting Junet asked all community members to respect that Suna East is a cosmopolitan constituency and voting is based on agenda and not clan or tribal politics.

“The muslim community might have their business or clan problems, but we are confident Suna East and Migori is so far for them to have any impact,” Okere said.
