President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday bought goats worth Sh15 million at the Kimalel Goat Auction and Cultural Festival in Baringo

The President who presided over the event said they would purchase 1,000 of the 3,000 goats that were on sale at the auction for Sh15,000 per goat.

"The DP and I will buy one goat at Sh15,000 but the rest have said they will buy at Sh13,000 and we will allow them that," Ruto said.

The President said all six Baringo MPs present at the auction bought 20 goats each putting their total expenditure at Sh1,560,000.

Other leaders of higher ranks including Baringo Senator William Cheptumo bought 50 goats each meaning they all spent Sh650,000 at the event.

"Na nikitangaza mnatengeneza pesa mnapeleka pale. Mambo ni mawili, hakuna deni na hakuna cheque. Hatutaki mambo ya kuulizana baadae ati cheque iliruka, tunamalizana hapa hapa," he said.

(When I announce be ready with the cash. Two things; no credit and no cheques. We don't want issues about bounced cheques, we finish everything on the spot)

Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi bought 150, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot 100, all Baringo MCAs bought 100 goats, and all CEOs present bought 300.

This year's goat auction which started on Wednesday was in its ninth edition.

The 2020 and 2021 auctions did not, however, occur due to the devastating Covid-19 pandemic where social distancing was adopted globally as a preventive measure against spreading infections.

During the 2022 episode, Ruto said a goat was bought at Sh12,000.

He asked those present to determine the price and the leaders proposed Sh12,500 but the residents declined.

They demanded Sh15,000 per goat but the leaders settled on Sh13,000, the President said he and the DP would pay Sh15,000 per goat.

Ruto was informed that KCB had supported the initiative with a Sh6 million donation.
