Police from Busia and Siaya counties have launched a manhunt for robbers who killed a cop who was escorting exams in Siaya on Monday.

Speaking to the press in Rwambwa, Bunyala, on Tuesday, Busia county police commander Joe Lekuta said the security team received a tip-off that the armed robbers were seen in Bunyala on Monday evening.

“We received information last evening that the suspects were seen in this area. We arrived here this morning at around 5am and we have combed the entire hill but without any success," he said.

Lekuta said investigations started Monday and expressed confidence that the culprits will soon be brought to book.

He urged residents to remain calm, saying patrols have been enhanced in the area.

"I want to assure residents that their security is well taken care of and urge them to volunteer relevant information that will assist security officers in arresting the suspects," he said.

Siaya county AP commander Mzungu Shabaan urged residents to report suspicious characters in their midst.

He said the suspects attacked police officers who were escorting KCSE examination materials to Mahero Secondary School on Monday morning, killing one police officer and leaving another one with critical injuries.

"We were later informed that the suspects had escaped through Rwambwa hills and that is why we have joined our Busia counterparts in a search operation," Shabaan said.

Resident Simon Nyende said he saw suspicious people in the area last evening hiding in one of the houses.

He said upon interrogation by residents, the suspects shot into the air  before escaping into the nearby Rwambwa hills.
