Bad omen? Second mugumo tree falls in Meru in span of 2 weeks

A second Mugumo tree fell on Wednesday at Kinoru area in Meru County in a span of two weeks.

Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders alluded the fall of the Mugumo tree to the the current leadership wrangles in Meru.

Speaking during the cleansing exercise of the sacred mugumo tree, Njuri Ncheke Secretary General Josephat Murangiri said the tree doesn't fall for no reason and might be a sign of leadership change in the county.

"When a Mugumo Tree falls, it is coming for a leadership or a leader. It doesn't fall for no reason. We all know that Meru has a problem. Some leaders who want development have agreed that the leadership in Meru is not good. The leader should go," he said.

In Meru, people used the mugumo tree as a shrine where they would offer sacrifices and worship their God known as Murungu.

They believed that the spirit of God dwells there and the tree belongs to God.

Meru County has been witnessing leadership wrangles with top county officials being at loggerheads.

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is set to face Senate plenary to know her fate following her impeachment by MCAs.

This is the second time the governor will face trial in the Senate after only 10 months.

She is facing charges of misappropriation and misuse of county resources, and nepotism and related unethical practices.

The governor is also accused of bullying, vilifying and demeaning other leaders, making illegal appointments and usurping statutory powers.

She has since denied all charges of wrongdoing.

Speaking on Saturday, Njuri Ncheke Elder Anthony Kimathi said the county has experienced wrangles for a long time. 

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood said the first Mugumo tree fell when the matter was in the county assembly and the second one fell when the senate received the notion.
