2 arrested as police recover suspected donkey meat in Kitui

Two men have been arrested as police recovered suspected donkey meat in Mwingi, Kitui County.

John Siriba Onkendi, 38, and Daniel Onywere Mukua, 42, were nabbed after they were busted while transporting the consignment using a motor - vehicle along Kyumbe - Nuu Road in Mwingi East subcounty on Tuesday.

The incident was reported to the Nuu police station as the recovery of suspected donkey meat.

Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the suspects were assaulted by an angry mob.

"An administrator reported that there was a suspicious motor vehicle found with meat along Kyumbe - Nuu Road. Police officers from Nuu police station responded to the scene and on arrival established that a grey Noah had developed mechanical problems along the said road. The named two suspects were found aboard the stalled motor vehicle," Napeiyan told the Star on Tuesday.

"The officers found the suspects had already been assaulted by the angry mob and the first suspect has sustained a slight head injury and was in stable condition," Napeiyan said.

The police chief said upon search, the motor vehicle had 18 sacks of the said meat which had slightly decomposed.

The scene was processed, motor vehicle was towed to the Nuu police station as both the suspects were placed in custody at the same station.

The confiscated meat was kept at the same police station awaiting inspection by a public health officer.
