Kenya to establish embassy in Bangladesh, Ruto says

The President said the assurance followed a request by the Bangladesh ambassador.

President William Ruto has said that he will consider setting up an embassy in Bangladesh.

Speaking on Friday in Athi River, the President said that it was a request from the ambassador of Bangladesh.

"I want to tell the ambassador who said that he wants us to establish an embassy in Bangladesh that I will give that request a very due consideration," he said.

Kenya and Bangladesh have maintained warm and cordial longstanding diplomatic relations since the independence of Bangladesh in 1975.

Bangladesh established its resident diplomatic representation in Nairobi since 1978 while Kenya’s High Commission New Delhi is accredited to Dhaka. 

Both countries are members of the Non-Aligned MovementGroup of 77Commonwealth of Nations and the Indian-Ocean Rim Association.

Bangladesh and Kenya have shown mutual interest in expanding bilateral trade and investments.

On February 13, the two countries signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on Political Consultations and between the Foreign Service Academies.

The Political Affairs agreement established a framework for regular and active diplomatic consultations between the two countries through reviewing progress in bilateral cooperation and identifying new areas of mutual benefit.

The Foreign Service Academy agreement was aimed at sharing expertise; exchange of teaching modalities; encouragement of study and research; exchange of experts and faculty members; arrangement of programmes and exploring newer prospects.

Kenya has also been importing medicines from Bangladesh.

Trade statistics indicate that during the past 25 years, the exports of Kenya to Bangladesh have increased.

Top exports to Bangladesh include tanned sheep hides, dried legumes, tea and iron whereas top imports include packing bags, jute and heavy cotton.
