Nairobi police officers, in conjunction with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), arrested two individuals for allegedly being in possession of prohibited plastic bags worth Sh2.4 million on Tuesday.

As stated by Nema, the arrested suspects were subsequently brought before the Makadara law courts to face charges.

Following due process, both individuals were levied with a fine of Sh100,000 each.

“The suspects were each fined Sh100,000,” Nema said in a statement

The confiscated bags were handed over to Nema for appropriate disposal or recycling procedures.

“The seized bags were released to NEMA for disposal or recycling,” the Authority said.

Since 2017, Nema has remained steadfast in its commitment to uphold the ban on the use, importation, and production of plastic carrier bags.

This sustained effort is aimed at mitigating the adverse environmental impact associated with the improper disposal of plastic materials.

This recent joint operation between the Nairobi police and Nema underscores the continued dedication of authorities to enforce these crucial environmental regulations.

By taking proactive measures against the unlawful possession of banned plastic bags, Nema sends a strong message about the importance of adhering to sustainable practices.

The release of the seized bags to Nema signifies a commitment to responsible waste management, as they will be either disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner or recycled for alternative use.

This successful operation serves as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in upholding environmental regulations and highlights the ongoing need for public awareness and compliance in the sustainable management of plastic waste.
