Kenyans were on Sunday and Monday treated to a show after President William Ruto decided to drive himself, and in a tiny electric car.

Even though it is not an official procedure for a president to be on the steering wheel, it is not a very rare sight for Kenyans.

On Sunday, President Ruto, wowed Kenyans by chauffeuring himself in a yellow car from the State House to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

He was accompanied by an all-electric motorcade comprising of two motorbike outriders, two cars and two electric bicycles.

The President visited the KICC to attend the Africa Youth Climate Assembly, a precursor to the African Climate Summit (ACS) which started on Monday.

Come Monday morning at around 8:30 am, Ruto once again drove the electric car from State House to KICC for the ACS.

He drove from the State House to Kenyatta Avenue, joined Uhuru Highway, proceeded to City Hall Way and made his entry at KICC.

The African Climate Summit will run parallel with the Africa Climate Week which will run from September 4-8, 2023.

Ruto's predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta also drove himself a couple of time during his presidential tenure.

On February 9, 2020, Uhuru drove to Nyayo National Stadium to inspect the preparations for former President Daniel Arap Moi's memorial service.

In August 2020, he left the Head of State's usual motorcade and drove himself to the Nairobi Railway Station, accompanied by only five vehicles.

In tow were vehicles carrying Major-General Mohamed Badi of the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i.

At the Station he inspected the then ongoing refurbishment then drove to Mombasa Road for inspection of other projects.

In March 2022, Uhuru made a surprise visit to Kenyatta Market, at the wheel of a black Mercedes Benz G Wagon.

On May 28, 2022, the retired President also left his chauffeur and drove himself to Uhuru Gardens for the KDF Museum Air Show.

He was accompanied by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The aforementioned are some of the moments when the former President chauffeured himself, breaking protocol.

Ruto driving himself elicited reactions from Kenyans.

Some expressed hope that the President will continue using the electric car as opposed to fuel-consuming vehicles while others called it a PR stunt.
