Azimio leader Raila Odinga has accused Central Organization of Trade Union secretary general Francis Atwoli of abandoning Kenyans in the fight for their rights.

He said that the Cotu boss should have been at the frontline leading Kenyans in mass demonstrations against the high cost of living.

Atwoli was a fierce critic of President William Ruto and an ardent Raila supporter but he shifted allegiance to the Kenya Kwanza side after elections.

Raila said there will be a problem if the workers union joins the government since the role of the workers union is to speak on behalf of workers and highlight their plight.

"If the workers' union aligns with the government, there will be a problem. There are usually three sides, tripartite. The workers, the government, and the employers," he said.

"Kenyans complained of the high cost of living and as political leaders, we say that what we are championing, Atwoli should be the one doing it," Raila added.

He was speaking on Saturday during the burial of former Cotu chairman Rajab Mwondi in Vihiga county.

"Even when we say the Kenyans should demonstrate, that is Atwoli's work."

The Azimio leader said Atwoli should set the limits to which he associates with the government and fight for workers' rights and ensure they don't suffer.

In his defence, Atwoli said he needs government's support to agitate for worker's welfare and he cannot do that while fighting the same government.

"I lead workers and you can't be fighting the government and at the same time you want it to look into the welfare of works," he said.
