Senate speaker Amason Kingi has gazetted Thursday, August 31 for a special sitting for senators to consider a Bill on climate change ahead of the Africa Climate Week (ACW).

The ACW 2023 will take place from September 4-8 in Nairobi alongside the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) which will run from September 4-6.

“The special sittings shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 9.30am and 2.30pm respectively,” Kingi said.

He said the notice followed a motion by Senate majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot which received the requisite support from other senators.

The Speaker said lawmakers will consider two matters; the Climate Change (Amendment) Bill, 2023 which originated from the National Assembly and a Motion on the alteration of the Senate Calendar for the second session.

“In accordance with the standing order 33 (5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this notice shall be only business before the Senate during the special sitting, following which the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 2.30pm in accordance with Senate Calendar,” the speaker said.

The Africa Climate Week (ACW 2023) is one of four Regional Climate Weeks held this year to build momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP 28 in Dubai.
