Day of chaos: Mayhem that rocked Azimio nationwide protests

Deaths, destruction of property, teargas canisters, stone throwing and run-ins with the police were the order of the day.

On Wednesday, a section of disgruntled Kenyans took to the streets to protest the high cost of living.

During the said protests, a lot of things transpired across various parts of the country.

Deaths, destruction of property, teargas canisters, stone-throwing and run-ins with the police were the order of the day.

The protest had been called by the Opposition outfit Azimio la Umoja, despite their leader Raila Odinga giving the protests a wide berth, over what he called "Plans by the police to use live ammunition on their supporters".

Police say at least 600 people were arrested over the same across the country.

Nairobi: While the Central Business District remained largely calm and peaceful, with minimal activity, other parts like Kamukunji were the centre of it all.

Police and youths waiting for Opposition leader Raila Odinga engaged in run-ins. The police lobed teargas to disperse the youth, while the youth threw stones at the police.

Police were forced to use water cannons to disperse the youth who were taking them in circles.

Kangemi and Kibera were no different as youths blocked roads during the protests, forcing police to intervene and use teargas to disperse them.

Kisumu: In the Lakeside city, at least seven people were admitted in various hospitals with gunshot and arrow wounds.

This followed highly charged protests in the county. The attacks by protestors also saw journalists sustain injuries while in the line of duty.

Despite most shops in Kisumu remaining closed, property of unknown value went ablaze in the Jua Kali area.

Nakuru: Here chaos erupted along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway as protesters threw stones on the highway and lit tyres on the road halting transport. 

Others removed the signboards in the city as they engaged police officers in a running battle.

Kisii: Anti-Riot police in Kisii battled pockets of anti-government protesters from street to street. 

Protests were especially intense along the Kisii-Kisumu road, with others outside the bus park, areas near Kisii Central SDA church and outside Aga Khan Hospital.

Most businesses remained shut in the town, as police engaged in running battles with protestors.

Mlolongo: Transport was paralysed on the Mombasa Highway as anti-government protesters barricaded the road at Nairobi Expressway in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

They also vandalised a section of road, as they engaged in a fight with the police. Two deaths were reported here and many others sustained injuries. Hundreds of demonstrators thronged the highway and barricaded it.

Kitengela: Here three people were shot dead while others sustained injuries during running battles between protestors and the police.

Nyamira: MCAs Duke Masira (Township) and Vincent Benecha (Kiabonyoru) led the mass protests in Nyamira County.

Police in the area used teargas to disperse the crowds that were lighting tyres along the roads leading to Nyamira town as businesses remain closed. Protestors burned tyres in the middle of the roads.

Busia: A car belonging to former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was damaged by a section of youth opposed to the protests.

Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah was forced to cut short his speech after an angry mob allegedly attacked his team.

Wajackoyah and ODM MPs Raphael Wanjala (Budalang’i) and Catherine Omanyo (Busia Woman Representative) were ejected from the venue in Marachi estate, Busia town. 

Makueni: A man was shot dead in the morning, and another sustained an injury to the leg.

This happened when police were dispersing protesters at Emali Town.

The demonstrators allegedly torched a police vehicle in the commotion, as well as destruction of public property.

Wote town: Defiant protesters engaged police in running battles, eventually managing to chase them away.

Mombasa: Peaceful protests were cut shot after the police barricaded Moi Avenue Road to block the protesters from accessing the CBD.

The police also used teargas to disperse the protestors. The demos were led by Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki, Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Woman Rep Zamzam Mohammed, Badi Twalib (Jomvu) and a host of Mombasa MCAs and civil rights groups.

Migori: Business was paralysed in Migori town over Azimio anti-government protests. This was despite heightened police presence in the town. Roads were closed as police engaged protestors.
