People Power Movement will on Friday lead Kisumu residents to hold a peaceful protest to commemorate Saba Saba Day.

In a statement, People Power Movement called on police to obey the law and to conduct themselves professionally to avoid violence.

"On this Saba Saba, the people of Kisumu join in solidarity call by Kenyans to commemorate this year's Saba-Saba. We shall start our peaceful march at Kondele and head to town where they will serve the county commissioner, on behalf of the President of Kenya, with a petition that speaks to issues faced by our communities," the statement read.

"We, a group of concerned citizens, members of the civil society, grassroots organizations, business sector organizations, representatives of women groups, youth groups and residential associations, student bodies, revolutionaries as well as patriotic Kenyans urge Kenyans to turn out in large numbers tomorrow."

Saba-Saba is a traditional protest date in commemoration of the protests held across Kenya on July 7 1991, to demand the opening up of democratic space and a multi-party system.

According to the organisation, Saba Saba is a day that the masses of Kenya subsequently used to speak truth to power and to identify and struggle across issues which need improvement.

"Our history of Saba Saba is written in blood, for it has always been a day that people resist oppression only to be met with repression," the statement read.

They said the move to hold a protest is to call out the government over the high cost of living, high food prices, high taxation, corrupt government officials and brutal police force.

"Every citizen has a right to peacefully protest, and to serve the government or duty bearers with petitions. That is what we want to do tomorrow," the statement read.

They asked Kisumu residents to be peaceful and conduct the process in accordance with the law.
