The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK)has condemned Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai for allegedly assaulting a KPLC official.

This was over claims that the officer identified as Julius Onkagi had removed electric poles leading to the legislator's house.

In a statement by IEK president Erick Ohaga, it termed the actions as unwarranted intimidation, harassment and vicious assault towards the officer

"We take great exception to the language, style and dangerous approach used by the MP to express his grievance, especially in modern-day Kenya," IEK said on Tuesday.

Ohaga demanded that the MP faces legal consequences for his actions.

He noted that they upheld Constitutional rights and freedom, adding that they also observed the rule of law in resolving arising grievances and disputes.

He listed the aforementioned as "freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishments".

"All individuals are bound by the supreme law of the land and no individual is an exception," he said.

Ohaga also demanded that the relevant authority in charge of licensing firearms by civilians permanently bars Mbai from holding an arms license.

"In the same vein, we call upon the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security to our members as they perform their duty to society all over the country," he added.

In a viral video, Mbai is seen lecturing the KPLC staff at his home in Kitengela and accusing them of purportedly demanding bribes before supplying electricity to the area residents.

He is then seen punching the KPLC official first but the clip does not show the official retaliating.

Talking to the Star earlier on Tuesday, the MP defended himself saying the Kenya Power Staff had invaded his house.

"I was fighting back the people who invaded me. I had to fight back. The viral video you are talking about has been edited to only show me fighting back," he commented.

Mbai said the KPLC officials had delayed installing power at his Kitengela home, prompting him to talk to their director in Nairobi.

"After I talked to the directors in Nairobi, engineers were sent to my house and they did the job," he said.

Onkangi however said the power to the MP's house was illegally installed.

He added that there were many illegal connections to electric power around the residence.

Calling for control over the construction of illegal and substandard power lines by unqualified persons, IEK said this has led to serious electrical accidents, damage to property and loss of lives.
