The public will have an opportunity to bid Farewell to freedom fighter Field Marshall Mukami Kimathi.

On Wednesday, the government announced that there will be a public viewing of the body before the burial for one hour.

"The National Organizing Committee, which is steering the funeral arrangements, hereby notifies wananchi that there will be a public viewing of the body on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Lee Funeral Home, Nairobi from 6 am to 7 am," Interior PS Raymond Omollo said.

After the viewing, the body will leave for the burial ceremony, which will be held on the same day at her rural home in Njabini, Nyandarua County, as per the family’s wishes.

PS Omollo also stated that condolence books are available for anyone who wishes to pay tribute to the late Mukami.

The books are available at Harambee House and at Mukami Kimathi’s home in Njabini.

Mukami Kimathi died aged 96 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi after developing breathing difficulties.

She passed away on Thursday night, May 4, 2023.

Mukami was mourned by leaders across the country led by President William Ruto, his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta, and ODM party leader Raila Odinga among others.

The government will fully fund and ensure a decent burial for the freedom fighter which will take place on Saturday.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said giving a befitting and decent burial to the Field Marshal will be one of the ways of recognising and appreciating her role and contribution to the liberation of the country from colonialism.

President Ruto is expected to attend the burial.
