KeNHA announces 24-hour closure of Embu-Meru Road

The Authority said heavy downpour has undermined drainage structure of the road near Ena.

The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced a 24-hour closure of Embu-Meru Road at Mutunduri near Ena.

The Authority said the closure follows heavy downpour that has undermined the drainage structure located close to St Mary's Kiangima Girls High School.

KeNHA cautioned road users against any attempts to use the affected area of the road during the closure period in the interest of their own safety.

The Authority advised motorists heading to Chuka and Meru from Embu Mutunduri to use Klanjokoma Runyenjes (A9), a distance of approximately 25km.

KeNHA said motorists heading to Embu from Meru and Chuka should use Runyenjes-Kianjokoma-Mutunduri (A9).

It said motorists heading to Kivwe and Ena from Embu should use Mutunduri-Kipugua-3.4km (paved) Kipugua-Mutetu 5.2km (unpaved) and Mutetu- Kivwe (A9)- 0.6km (paved).

Earlier, KeNHA announced the closure of Oletepesi-Magadi (B19) Road.

The Authority said the closure followed the occurrence of flash floods on several sections of the road due to heavy downpour.

"We will continue to monitor the water levels and begin restoration works when the water subsides," the Authority said in a statement.

"We remain committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate the safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity."

A section of the Embu-Meru Highway was also closed after cracks emerged on the Ikong’u bridge.

The crack was on the right side of the road.
