ICT cabinet secretary Eliud Owalo on Monday launched a food distribution exercise in flood-hit areas in the Lake Victoria region.

It marked the third day of government relief food distribution to support families affected by the floods in Siaya County.

"This morning, I launched the distribution of relief food in Ugunja, Alego-Usonga and Bondo Sub-Counties accompanied by Bondo MP, Gideon Ochanda," Owalo said in a statement.

SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority chairman Jack Ranguma and Postal Corporation of Kenya chairperson Rose Nyamunga accompanied the CS to the event.

Owalo said Lake Basin Authority chair James Waore Diang’a, Chemelil Sugar Eng. John Nyambok, Oyugi Dor and National and county government leaders were also present.

"As the Government, we remain committed to finding a lasting solution to the recurrent challenge of floods and food shortages and cost of living," Owalo said.

The food distribution is an initiative of President William Ruto in the wake of flooding in the Lake Victoria region.

The floods have been occasioned by torrential rains, further compounding need for relief aid to affected families which were already grappling with the after effects of a prolonged drought.
