Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda on Saturday flagged-off food and non food items worth Sh3 million to help flood victims across the county.

The items included rice, beans, cooking oil, soap, sugar, maize flour, salt, dignity pack, blankets and mosquito nets. The donations also included tree seedlings.

Ojienda said the distribution started in Kolwa East and Central within Kisumu East subcounty.

He said they will then do the same distributions to flood victims in Nyakach , Nyando subcounties.

The senator said this is just the beginning as he will continue to do more to support the families affected by the ragging floods within Kisumu county.

Ojienda said they are using personal resources to help since the Senate does not get funding from the National government for emergencies.

"What we are doing as Senate office is just to make our contribution together with partners and friends by raising funds for purposes of assisting the people of Kisumu. This is in line with our philosophy that we must help our people where we can," he said.

The senator also disclosed that they are pushing for the Koru Soin dam construction because it will help ease some of the floods.

"You know a lot of our floods are a function of precipitation on the hills, and when the water comes down the effect is there for all of us to see. We must focus on it we are doing that. I have raised the same this in the Senate," Ojienda said.

There have been numerous appeals from flood victims for humanitarian assistant from the county government.

The flash floods occasioned by heavy rains have so far displaced more than 5000 people in Nyando, Kadibo, Nyakach, Muhoroni, Kisumu East and Seme subcounties.

There are fears of the numbers going higher as rains continue to pound different regions across the country.

Marooned homes, submerged with water covering access roads and families in rescue centers marked the face of floods within the county.
