On the Radar: Azimio resumes anti-government protests

Key activities and events lined up for today.

In Summary

• Police bodyguards seconded to Azimio La Umoja coalition leaders who are planning to attend Tuesday protests were Monday recalled in a surprise move.

• The new lower National Health Insurance Fund penalty rates for defaulters have taken effect.

The Opposition led by Raila Odinga will on Tuesday resume the anti-government protests.

The demos are expected to take place across the country with Nairobi being the centre of activities.

This is despite the Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei saying that the planned demonstration by Azimio leaders in the capital has been outlawed.

Ezekiel arraigned

Pastor Ezekiel Odero and his lawyers will return to court where a judge is expected to give a ruling on his detention.

Police had sought to have him detained for 30 days. The state had applied for orders to hold the New Life Prayer Center preacher for a month pending a probe into his church's operations.

Ezekiel is accused of conspiracy to murder, crimes against humanity, abduction, child cruelty and money laundering.

Azimio leaders bodyguards recalled ahead of planned protests

Police bodyguards seconded to Azimio La Umoja coalition leaders who are planning to attend Tuesday protests were Monday recalled in a surprise move.

Their commander sent a random message to all police officers attached to VIPs from the coalition ordering them to report to the Security of Government Building offices and return their weapons.

Police arrest Mackenzie's wife

Police on Monday arrested the wife of pastor Paul Mackenzie in the ongoing investigation into the Kilifi cult.

Rhoda Mumbua Maweu was arrested from her house in Mtwapa alongside her aunt on Monday night, police said.

Police said Mumbua has been identified as a key figure within the church's operations hence the move to arrest her.

New NHIF defaulter rates take effect

The new lower National Health Insurance Fund penalty rates for defaulters have taken effect.

NHIF last month said self-employed contributors to the scheme will from May 1 pay lower penalties should they default on their contributions.

Under the new penalty rates, defaulters will pay 10 per cent of the contributor’s amount.

Anti-riot police to read the proclamation to Azimio protesters

Anti-riot police deployed to disperse any group planning a protest have been ordered to employ new tactics before they charge at the protesters.

Police believe the protests will be held majorly in Nairobi.

The anti-riot teams on the ground have been supplied with loudspeakers that they will use in declaring a proclamation before charging at the protesters.

They will announce that the meeting or protest is unlawful and read the sections of the law they are citing before taking action.
