President William Ruto has said he is working on coming up with the Official Office of the Opposition leader.

The President gave reasons on why the office should exist saying it will help with accountability.

Speaking during the Mo Ibrahim Governance Weekend at the Kenya International Convention Centre, Ruto said the office will be funded by taxpayers.

"I would also work on establishing the Office of the Leader of Opposition, I know it sounds weird, doesn't sound right. We do not have the structures to hold the government to account," Ruto said.

"We come from a five-year government where there was no distinction between the government and opposition,  because of the handshake that was in Kenya."

Ruto added that there were no structures to support the opposition.

"That is why it became easy for executive to lure the opposition by engaging them for a handshake," Ruto said.

"Today it is the only thing outstanding, I am working on it so that we can have an office of the official leader of the opposition funded by public funds to hold the government to account."

Ruto said the opposition will help with accountability to better manage resources.

He said that Kenya must also work on the governance of the economy.

Ruto last year urged legislators to see to it the establishment of the office of the Leader of Opposition.

He insisted that it is part of what will strengthen institutions of governance.

His proposal came under sharp criticism as leaders gave their views on the matter.

Others were of the opinion that the president was right while other leaders said it could be a plot to seek a truce with Raila.
