Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kithure Kindiki will on Saturday head to the North Rift for Operation Maliza Uhalifu.

This is a day after he visited Shakahola Forest to inspect the ongoing rescue mission and exhumation exercises.

The government upscaled the search and rescue efforts for persons suspected to be holed up in the thickets in Shakahola, Kilifi County.

Kindiki's visit to the North Rift comes amid continued attacks in the area with bandits stealing animals and leaving many dead.

More than 150 people have been killed and many injured in the past seven months.

So far, about 200 assorted guns have been recovered from bandits in the region.

Kindiki imposed an initial dusk-to-dawn curfew in banditry-prone areas as he declared them disturbed and dangerous.

He, at the same time revealed in the last seven months more than 150 Kenyans, including 20 officers, have been killed.

The initial 30 days curfew began on February 14, 2023.

Kindiki through a gazette notice said some areas in counties including Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu will be affected. He also declared parts of North Rift that have been affected by insecurity are disturbed and dangerous.

Kindiki has since declared the ongoing operation to end banditry in the North Rift a success.

The CS said security forces had managed to reclaim gorges and caves where bandits had turned into their homes.

"All these places, the caves, gorges and ravines, all others that were being used as hideouts for bandits have been cleared and dominated by security forces," he said.
