Red Cross donates mobile morgue in Shakahola

The high number of bodies has overwhelmed the county mortuary

The International Committee of the Red Cross Nairobi Regional Delegation (ICRC) has donated a refrigerated container to preserve exhumed bodies from Shakahola shallow graves.

In a Twitter post by Kenya Red Cross, they said the high number of bodies has overwhelmed the county mortuary.

“The high number of bodies from the Shakahola incident continues to overwhelm facilities in Kilifi county, " Kenya Red Cross said.

"To support the county, with help from our partners ICRC Nairobi, a refrigerated container has just arrived and will be used as a makeshift morgue for the bodies recovered from the site."

As of Tuesday evening, the death toll in Shakahola hit more than 90 with more bodies still believed to be buried in shallow graves inside the Shakahola Forest.

On Tuesday, Kenya Red Cross said it had set up tracing and counseling desks at the Malindi subcounty hospital for the Shakahola response.

At leat 213 people had been reported missing, among them 112 are children below 18 years who are suspected to be followers of controversial Malindi preacher Paul Mackenzie.

Hundreds of Mackenzie's followers had moved to the vast forest to fast to death to allegedly meet Jesus Christ.
