Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has banned night travel for school buses.
In a statement on Wednesday, Murkomen said school vans, buses and matatus that are unroadworthy must be removed from the roads.
"School transportation shall not be allowed to operate between 10 pm and 5am in line with the Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2017, effective immediately," he said.
Murkomen added that all school children must be allocated seats with functional seatbelts put on at all times.
"In the implementation of the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS), all heavy commercial operators must ensure vehicles with a tare weight of 3,049 Kgs and above are fitted with speed limiters," he said.
The CS listed other new measures to curb road accidents in the country.
He said all the 57 licensed speed limiter vendors must install approved gadgets that will limit speed and record speed data after every 5 seconds.
He said the data must also be transmitted to NTSA and the vendor servers and report violations in real time.
"To ensure all public service vehicles operate with functional speed limiters, a multi-agency clinic shall be formed to verify and validate all speed limiters from April 25, 2023, to May 31, 2023," he said.
He added that all stakeholders including public transport operators, speed limiter vendors and the National Police Service will be incorporated into the multi-agency exercise.
