South Imenti MP Shadrack Mwiti has urged school management to insure their infrastructure for compensation in case of fires.

He said this will help cushion parents who are left with the financial burden to rebuild facilities in case of fires.

He spoke during the issuance of bursaries at Kanyakini in Meru County.

Students received cheques worth Sh36 million.

"We have to secure our facilities, infrastructure, in our schools through insurance cover so that we get compensation when such an accident occurs," he said.

The leaders said the National Government Constituency Development Fund should be used to secure the schools, adding that too much loss has been suffered.

Earlier in the month, a section of a dormitory at St Peters Boys' High School in Mumias, Kakamega was destroyed by fire.

The school principal, Crisphinus Owino, said at least 90 students lost their property.
