Bungoma school closed indefinitely after arson incident

Friends Boys' High School, Namwela, in Sirisia Constituency in Bungoma county was on Tuesday closed indefinitely after fire razed down a dormitory on Monday night.

The dorm houses 200 students but none was hurt during the incident.

Addressing the press on Tuesday at the school premises, Bungoma county Kuppet executive secretary Augustine Luketelo condemned the incident and advised the students to work hard while in school.

The union leader noted that schools resumed just recently and students should be in class to cover the syllabus.

"Students have stayed home for a very long time, I wonder why they still want to stay at home,” he said.

Luketelo called on the teachers and parents to guide their children well while at home to avoid incidents of their involvement in arson cases in learning institutions.

He said that the school has been closed indefinitely to allow for a probe to be conducted.

“This incident is being sponsored by people scheming to bring Namwela Boys down but I want to tell them that I won’t allow this school to fall,” Sitati said.

He said that arson cases have been rampant in the school and warned that those found to be masterminding the crime will be arrested and charged.

The board chair said that the administration is on a path to improve the school.

Sitati called on area MP, senator and Governor Ken Lusaka to intervene and help students who lost their property in the Monday night inferno.
