Amnesty International and Haki Africa have appealed to the police to be impartial during Thursday’s mass action.

The two organisations regretted that police have not been treating all parties equally in the last two demonstrations.

Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid said the police should not be used by politicians to favour certain areas, properties or interests.

“The police have to be neutral. People in Kibra have the right to be protected in the same manner as people in other areas,” he said.

Amnesty International Executive Houghton Irungu echoed Khalid’s sentiments saying police have a mandate of serving all Kenyans.

The two spoke in Kibra after visiting the Pentecostal Church of East Africa church which was set ablaze by unknown people. Masjid A-Aqsa Islamic Mosque was also set on fire by unknown arsonists.

Property including the PCEA school and homes around were damaged during the unrest.

Irungu said it was regrettable police did not rush to Kibra or retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family land in Ruiru when it was invaded.

“We want assurances it will not happen again. Where were the police when people invaded the farm in Ruiru? A lot of them were deployed in Dagoretti North to stop the mass action when people were looting in other areas,” he stated.

Khalid said police should be availing themselves when people need their services.
