Breakdown of 152 cases of police killings in 2022

January saw the highest police killings, with 28 cases from 11 incidents.

A report by Missing Voice has revealed that 2022 recorded 152 cases of police killings and enforced disappearances.

A report dubbed the Accountability report which sheds light on Statistics and Trends of Extrajudicial Killings and Enforced Disappearances in Kenya in 2022  states that out of the 152, 130 cases were police killings and 22 were enforced disappearances.

Despite the huge number, last year saw a 31.5 per cent drop in police killings and enforced disappearances compared to 2021, where Missing Voices documented 219 cases. 

Police killings also dropped by 30.1 per cent and disappearances by 38 per cent.

"This is a positive trend, and we look forward to a Kenya without police violence," reads the report.

The report reveals that January saw the highest number of police killings, with 28 cases from 11 incidents.

July followed second with 21 police killings arising from 12 incidents.

The third-highest month was February, with 13 police killings arising from nine incidents.

"No enforced disappearance was recorded in April, July, November, and December 2022," reads the report.

The report was launched by Missing Voice, in partnership with Amnesty International, Defenders coalition, and Code of Africa among other institutions.
